In order to properly mend a significant ankle injury, our clients recognized that ongoing access to a therapy pool would be ideal. Their existing garage was big enough to house the 10’ x 15’ x 5’ pool, but it would require substantial improvements to create their dream space. Rather than spend their daily workout time in a sterile gym-like environment, they dreamed of being transported to their favorite vacation spot—Amangiri, a resort in Canyon Point, Utah. There, the landscape is an ancient desert under a vast blue sky stretching over gold and red rock mountains.

Structurally this 1920s garage had termite damage in the main beam, low collar ties, no insulation or drainage, an uneven floor, small single-pane windows, and (a no longer needed) garage door. All remediation was designed to support the reimagined space. A multi-tiered HVAC system was installed for humidity control and the ceiling supports were raised to give the room a spacious feel. Panoramic windows were installed for additional light overlooking views of the private tree-lined property. Local artist Paige Orpin perfectly captured the Amangiri aesthetic through a mural with a visual texture of a vintage tapestry. The pool deck, a mixture of organic zellige tiles, and the twilight-blue surrounding walls and ceiling reminiscent of the early-evening desert sky envelop as you enter, cementing the color story in this unique environment.
